(Tou gu) A popular old fashioned garden annual that produces brilliant pink, red, purple and white double blooming blossoms, looking much like pea flowers, on tall succulent stems. Genus name impatiens means, impatient which originates from the quick burst of its seeds from ripened pods. Was popular with the Victorians after it was introduced to Europe in the early 20th century. Has been used in Asian medicine for rheumatism, fractures and other ailments. Known as bongseonhwa dae in Korean medicine, used for constipation and gastritis. Nail varnish is made from the blossoms in Korea! Like impatiens, the balsam plant is a wonderful choice to brighten up shade gardens, although it also thrives in full sun. Seeds sprout fast, only taking about 2 months from germination to blooming!
