(Besobela; Ethiopian tulsi; Temperate tulsi) This basil definitely grows on you! Spicy and fruity, with surprising notes of vanilla, myrrh and berries. This basil is probably a form of besobela from the highlands of Ethiopia where it is an essential ingredient in berbere spice, shiro curry, and niter kibbeh, a seasoned butter that is added almost any dish. It also makes a great tea to enjoy anytime. Traditionally the tea made with ginger and honey is used for bronchitis, asthma and flu. Studies show that the tea also helps to manage stress. Very easy to grow. Tolerates cool conditions better than most other basils. Has been known to survive frost as low as -7C/-12F. Ht. 45cm (18").
Often sold incorrectly in America under the name kapoor tulsi. True kapoor tulsi is camphor basil, a completely different plant.
