Aromatic leathery leaves used as a diuretic, stomachic and sedative. Contains boldine which stimulates the flow of bile and gastric juice and promotes the excretion of uric acid. Leaves are useful for urinary inflammation, sluggish liver function, liver or gallbladder pains, gall stones, and rheumatism. Widely used in South America for gonorrhea. Small evergreen shrub from the Chilean Andes. Seed germination is slow and sporadic.
