(Yellow dock) A herb with a long history of use as a food and medicine. Like burdock, the yellow, carrot like root of this herb is used primarily for chronic skin complaints including eczema, psoriasis, hives and dermatitis. It is classified as an alterative, which means it has “blood purifying” properties, which attributes to its skin benefits. Powdered or infused root can be used topically for skin eruptions. Its mild laxative effects can be utilized for constipation. Seeds were once ground up as a substitute for flour, as well as roasted as a coffee substitute and leaves used as a nutritious potherb. Seeds produce a creamy yellow dye and the roots produce a dark olive colour. Plants thrive well in dry areas with poor soil, often found along roadsides or disturbed areas. Height 4.5 feet.
