North Eurasian small tree of increasing economic importance. Orange berries are rich source of vitamins A and C. Seabuckthorn is amazingly hardy, drought and disease resistant, and survives even in poor soils. This is a wild variety best suited for shelter belts, erosion control, slope stabilization, and wildlife habitats. It is a nitrogen fixer and a good bee plant. Not suited for fruit production because fruits are small and too acidic. For fruits choose from among the improved cultivars listed separately. Seeds require 90 days stratification at 5°C/40°F to overcome dormancy. Plants raised from seeds will be half male and half female. Ht. 2–4m/7–13ft.
