Very astringent and antiseptic which makes it useful internally or externally to treat hemorrhoids, diarrhea, excessive menstrual bleeding or as a gargle for sore throats. Topically, it can help heal hemorrhoids, eczema and wounds. A remedy that was even listed in the United States pharmacopeia up to 1916.
