Native to the western Mediterranean, northern Africa, and southern Europe. Pink to purple flowers are clustered in spikes. Root nodules contain nitrogen-fixing bacteria that replenish nitrates in soil. Good diuretic without usual harmful side effects. Effective for dropsy, rheumatism, gout and kidney and bladder disorders.
