(Monkshood; Wolfsbane) Spikes of attractive poisonous, helmet-like, cerulean blue flowers make a majestic tall border and garden background. Its toxic nature, attributed to a compound called aconitine, has been known since ancient times. The agent, was extracted and used to coat arrowheads in battle and hunting. The entire plant is poisonous and can only be used under medical supervision. Handling with gloves is recommended, even the seeds. Sow in rich, moist, well-draining soil in full sun to part shade. Seeds need a cold cycle and are difficult to germinate, so care must be taken. Tolerates deer and rabbits, but not drought. Ht 24-48in (60-120cm); Spread 12-18in (30-45cm).
