A member of the teasel family, this beautiful ornamental annual, is striking for its unusual globe shaped flower heads composed by delicate papery cup-like calyces. Varieties in the Scabiosa genus have been used widely in traditional medicine, as they are packed with bioactive compounds. Fascinating new 2018 research has demonstrated the antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-tyrosinase and cytotoxic activity the extracts hold. Makes great fresh and dry flower arrangements, typically lasting about 8-10 days in a vase, turning bronze when dried. Prefers neutral to alkaline well drained soil and full sun. Will bloom prolifically, especially when flower heads are cut regularly. Germination 10-12 days. Height 28-36 inches.
