A native wildflower in the daisy family, also known as Mexican hat, with brilliant red yellow and brown petals pointed downwards, resembling a hat worn during fiestas. Columnifera refers to the column shape of its central cone. Can be found along roadsides, meadows, prairies and disturbed areas in North America. Leaves and stems were once used by the Navajo and Cheyenne as an analgesic for chest pains, wounds and fevers. Boiled plant parts were used as a wash to treat poison ivy. Grows easily, with little maintenance required when planted in average, dry to medium well-drained soils in full sun. Drought resistant. Height 30-100cm/12-40”.
