(Leaf ginseng; Surinam spinach) The glossy, dark-green whorled leaves and tiny red flowers make this a perfect succulent houseplant. Extensively commercially cultivated as a food and medicinal plant in tropical countries including Nigeria, Cameroon, Caribbean, Brazil and the Philippines. Has slightly sour young leaves and tender stems which can be chopped and added in salads, parboiled, steamed, sauteed or added to soups. Careful not to overcook, otherwise it will get too soft and mucilaginous! Highly regarded in Indonesia, as it is nutrient dense, with an energizing effect similar to ginseng. Many bioactive compounds have been extracted from the leaves, giving it multifunctional properties including but not limited to analgesic, antiallergenic, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, antimicrobial and antihypertensive functions. Locate in rich soil and partial shade.
