Prickly Ash
Zanthoxylum clava-herculis
Uses: Medicinal
(Toothache tree) Prickly Ash is native to southeastern United States. The name zanthoxylum clava-herculis is derived from the trees large thorned trunk, and its resemblance to Hercules weapon of choice—the spiked club. We carry the most medicinally active variety. Bark harvested from this small shrubby tree stimulates the circulatory system. Useful in many chronic diseases such as rheumatism, skin diseases and varicose veins. It is also used for low blood pressure, swelling, and ulcers. Well-known Native American analgesic remedy for toothache, as chewing the bark numbs the mouth and gums, helps to stimulate saliva and helps clear infection.
