Bilberry
Vaccinium myrtillus
Uses: Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 2-7)
When to Sow: Spring/Late Summer/Early Fall Ease of Germination: Difficult/Special Treatment Required
A low growing shrub in the blueberry, cranberry and huckleberry family. One of the richest sources of anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants and key biologically active components, which typically give dark coloured berries their colour. Said to improve vision, lower blood glucose and have anti-inflammatory and anti cancer effects. Both the leaves and the berries are used medicinally. Because the leaves and berries contain some of the same chemicals, some of their uses coincide. The berries are used for diarrhoea and blood vessel protection while the leaves are used for cystitis and diabetes. The medicinal investigation of bilberry began after reports of improved night vision occurred among WWII royal airforce pilots after consuming bilberry jam. Can be brewed into a tea.
