Easily recognized for its barbed fruit known as “burs” that will grab on to your clothes and pets when walking through the bush. These burs later inspired the development of velcro! An extremely hardy biennial native to both Asia and Europe but now naturalized across North America. Has a long history of use as a food and medicinal plant by the Native Americans and a strong contributer to modern herbal medicine. Roots have blood purifying properties, terming it an alterative specifically targeted for skin complaints, especially associated with psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis. Also acts as a diuretic, antibacterial and has been studied for its effect on blood sugar regulation. Roots have a sweet mucilaginous texture when chewed. The bitter constituents as well as the mucilaginous nature may be the reason why it has been historically used as a digestive tonic. Typically dosed as a tincture and decoction. An infusion or tincture of the leaf can be used externally as a poultice. One of four herbs in the Essiac® anti-cancer formula. Although the roots are the most common part used medicinally, the leaves and seeds are also used. Seeds need to be stratified before germination will occur. Easy to grow but spread must be managed! Long brown parsnip like roots grow fast and can reach up to 2 feet in 100 days and ultimately a length of 2-3 feet. Height 1m.
