Chaga
Inonotus obliquus
Uses: Medicinal Duration: Perennial
Chaga is a fungus found in the boreal forests throughout the Northern Hemisphere. It grows mainly on birch trees, but is also found on alder, beech, oak and poplar. It grows under the tree bark but then erupts through looking curiously like burnt charcoal. Chaga has been used in Russian, Chinese and folk medicine for centuries as a tonic and for gastrointestinal health. It is very rich in antioxidant polysaccharides. Traditionally it is ground into a powder and used to brew a coffee-like beverage but it is also taken as a tea or as a tincture.
