Cinquefoil
Potentilla recta
Uses: Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 4-8)
When to Sow: Spring/Late Summer/Early Fall Ease of Germination: Easy
Cinquefoil is unique in that in response to stormy weather, its leaves will move, and cover its flower in order to protect it. Cinquefoil produces lightly coloured yellow flowers with heart shaped petals. Its astringency due to high tannin content make it an effective treatment for dysentery, hemorrhoids and diarrhea when brewed as a tea. A root infusion has also been used traditionally as a mouthwash against infections and ulcerations. Cinquefoils astringency can also be utilized topically as an application to soothe burns, wounds and stop bleeding. It is an edible herb that can be enjoyed in a salad or cooked. Leaves should be harvested just before flowering. Thrives in disturbed soils, often found in meadows and pastures. Ht. 18-24in (45-60cm).
