Sacred incense of the Maya, Inca and Aztec, copal is a dried resin that is often used as a substitute for amber. Considered an organic gemstone, the pale, glassy resin powders easily, and smells sweetly of honey. The burning incense is believed to induce a state of calm relaxation, making it popular for sweat lodges and meditative states. It is applied topically to bruises, sore joints and wounds, and also tinctured to use as a central nervous system depressant.
