When to Sow: Spring Ease of Germination: Easy
Mounds of pink clover like flowers cover the ferny creeping stems on this low growing and quickly spreading groundcover herb. First introduced from Europe to North America in the 1950s as a means for erosion control and often found along highways. Valued for its ability to fix nitrogen through its rood nodule interactions with rhizobial bacteria. For this reason it is used to help re mediate strip mined soils. Once used to strengthen the heart as well as support the prostate. A decoction of the bark was once used as an emetic and topically for rheumatic joints and cramps. Contains glycosides, similar to the cardiac glycosides found in purple foxglove, used for heart disorders. Has similar function and toxicity! Toxicity is also attributed to nitro compounds. Also has antimicrobial and cytotoxic effects. Although not the best choice for gardening, it is perfect for filling barren ground patches and south facing slopes.
