Its mild laxative effects can be utilized for constipation. Seeds were once ground up as a substitute for flour, as well as roasted as a coffee substitute and leaves used as a nutritious potherb. Seeds produce a creamy yellow dye and the roots produce a dark olive colour. Plants thrive well in dry areas with poor soil, often found along roadsides or disturbed areas. Height 4.5 feet.
