Hardy Chicago Fig
Ficus carica 'Hardy Chicago'
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 7-11)
As its name suggests, it is one of the very best varieties for both taste and cold hardiness! Fruits are brown-purple with strawberry-coloured flesh and a rich, earthy, delicious flavour. Years ago this variety was brought to Chicago by Sicilians from Mount Etna and has been grown in the Chicago area by dedicated fig fans ever since. Thrives, even in North America with the right protection and care, surviving in zones as low as 4! Plant in full sun to part shade in rich, moist and well draining soil. Plant in a container in colder climates and bring in to a cool dark garage (between 10C and 15C) to go dormant over the winter as soon as night temperatures are expected to be below -5C. Leaves will turn yellow and drop and can be acclimatised back to the outdoors in spring!
