McEwen Red Garlic
Allium sativum ophioscordon 'McEwen Red'
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 3-8)
When to Sow: Late Summer/Early Fall
A new variety developed by Ontario garlic grower Bruce McEwen. Tests at the University of Guelph showed that this variety is one of the highest in allicin, the compound that is responsible for many of garlic’s health-giving properties. Garlic lovers love the flavour, preferring it over that of others. The bulbs keep very well, and the cloves are easy to peel. Has 7-8 plump cloves per bulb.
