The root of this famous European alpine herb is unrivalled as a bitter tonic, used for weak digestion and lack of appetite by stimulating digestive juices. Also used for sluggish bowels. Roots are typically administered as an infusion, decoction or alcohol extract. Also used for parasite and bacterial infections. Thrives in a sheltered location in well drained alkaline conditions and does not tolerate hot climates very well. Very slow growing and can take 2-7 years to reach flowering maturity. Produces golden star shaped yellow flowers. Germination ca be difficult, typically yielding a 40% success rate! Requires a cold period (4-5 weeks at 5°C/40°F) or 24 hours in 40-70 ppm gibberellic acid for success. Maintain at 10-15°C/50-60°F until germination is complete.
