Variegated Ground Ivy
Glechoma hederacea 'Variegata'
Uses: Medicinal/Beverage Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 5-9)
(Creeping Charlie) Lovely scalloped green leaves dappled with splashes of white, a ground cover plant that gleams in shady, out of the way places. Easy to please, variegated ground ivy loves to fill in those spots under trees or hedges where other plants fail to thrive, overcoming poor soils and lack of light. Blooming with pretty little lavender flowers, it is native to Europe and has naturalized to North America. In moist, fertile soils its obliging vigour may lead it to spread easily. A favourite in container gardens, it may be happiest in hanging baskets, trailing straight down 1m (3 ft) or more. Dried leaves may be used to make tea, thought to be an effective tonic for the bronchial, digestive and urinary systems.
