Guarana
Paullinia cupana
Uses: Medicinal
Used for hundreds of years by the Brazilians, Guarana is respected for its variety of applications! Bright orange-red seed capsules contain black seeds. Normally prepared by dissolving powdered seeds in water, promoting a stimulant effect, owing to its caffeine content. The first report of this interesting herb was made in 1669 by the missionary Johannes Philippus Bettendorf who observed the natives using it to treat headaches, fevers and cramps. Also used in the food industry as a flavouring agent as well as a caffeine source for soft drink companies.
