Guggul
Commiphora mukul
Uses: Medicinal
The gum of a shrubby tree native to Africa and Asia, having a pungent fragrance similar to myrrh. Known as bdellium in some ancient sources, it is used in incense and perfumes. The incense is thought to have a spiritually purifying effect. Braziers of smoking guggul are carried from room to room in the home, scenting the air and allowing the smoke to cleanse the home of malign influence. The resin has been an important ingredient in Ayurvedic medicine for over a thousand years, used in the treatment of arthritis and obesity. Modern preliminary studies into its effectiveness on osteoarthritis have shown demonstrable improvement in function and pain reduction. Guggul contains phytosteroids that are the focus of ongoing research into its effect on weight loss and high cholesterol, where it has shown modest cholesterol lowering effects.
