One-seed Juniper
Juniperus monosperma
Uses: Medicinal
(Cedar berry) A traditional Native American remedy for stomach ills, juniper berry has a sharp, bright taste that is pleasantly woodsy. Gourmands add it to wild game to flavour the meat. The medicinal variety can be steeped to create a tea, or tinctured to use as a medicinal. It is a powerful diuretic and carminative; not for extended use. “Berry” is a misnomer, as it is not a berry at all but a cone of the juniper tree. Juniper provides the main flavouring ingredient of gin, a crude version of which was used to no effect as a remedy for the Black Plague.
