Kola nuts have a pleasantly bitter taste reminiscent of chocolate, to which it is related. They were one of the original ingredients of Coca-Cola. They contain caffeine, and theobromine, both of which are potent broncho-dilators that aid in asthma and migraine. They are stimulant, increasing alertness, and reducing hunger. A common sight in African street markets, they are important in ritual ceremonies and popularly consumed there for their stimulant qualities. Used to excess, they cause nervousness and will stain the teeth.
