Woolly Lamb’s Ear
Stachys byzantina
Uses: Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 4-9)
When to Sow: Spring/Late Summer/Early Fall Ease of Germination: Easy
Delightful soft, silver-gray foliage resembles lambs ears in appearance and touch; ideal for contrasting and grey gardens. One of 34 species in the genus Stachys from Iran which have been collectively used as an antibacterial, antitumour, antiinflammatory agent along with many other applications. Because of its soft texture, it has been historically used to bandage wounds. Thrives in average soil in full sun but appreciates some afternoon shade in hot climates. Looks great as an edging, along walkways, massed as a groundcover and in rock gardens. Has a dense clump forming and spreading growth habit, reaching about 6-8 inches tall. Pink-purple flowers appear as tall flower spikes in late spring or early summer. Sensitive to overwatering and stagnant conditions and prone to root rot.
