Folgate Lavender
Lavandula angustifolia 'Folgate'
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal/Aromatic/Industrial Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 5-9)
Neat compact variety with a slightly spreading habit. Has gorgeous dark violet, mildly scented flowers. Well suited for gardens and borders as well as cutting and drying. Named after its original development at Folgate Nursery in England in 1924. A 2012 “Award of Garden Merit” winner for the Royal Horticultural Society! Like any other variety, Folgate Lavender must be located in full sun and planted in well drained alkaline sandy soil, ideally in a raised bed or rock garden as it is prone to root rot if conditions are too wet. Perfect for borders, rock gardens and containers. After the second year of growth, begin pruning once or twice a year, cutting back a third of its foliage. This will help maintain its shape, leaf and flower production as well as prevent woodyness. Bloom time early July. Height 12 inches.
