Munstead Lavender
Lavandula angustifolia 'Munstead'
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal/Aromatic Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 4-9)
When to Sow: Spring/Late Summer/Early Fall Ease of Germination: Moderate
Beautiful and especially hardy! Lavender-blue flower spikes are bluer and earlier in bloom time than most other varieties! Aromatic narrow green foliage with a compact mounding growth habit. Like any other variety, Munstead Lavender must be located in full sun and planted in well drained alkaline sandy soil, ideally in a raised bed or rock garden as it is prone to root rot if conditions are too wet. Perfect for borders, rock gardens, containers and as mass plantings. After the second year of growth, begin pruning once or twice a year, cutting back a third of its foliage. This will help maintain its shape, leaf and flower production as well as prevent woodyness. Bloom time July and onwards. Height 12-18 inches.
