Twickel Purple Lavender
Lavandula angustifolia 'Twickel Purple'
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal/Aromatic Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 5-9)
Named after its development at Hollands Twickel Castle prior to 1922, this variety is an English lavender with an outstanding fragrance. Makes an excellent choice for sachets and cutting. Similar to the standard English variety but unique for its larger robust appearance and looser growth habit. Plant in full sun and well drained alkaline sandy soil, ideally in a raised bed or rock garden as it is prone to root rot if conditions are too wet. Perfect for borders, rock gardens and containers. After the second year of growth, begin pruning once or twice a year, cutting back a third of its foliage. This will help maintain its shape, leaf and flower production as well as prevent woodyness. Bloom time July-early August. Height 60cm/2ft.
