French Lavender
Lavandula stoechas
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal/Aromatic Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 8-9)
When to Sow: Spring/Anytime Ease of Germination: Moderate
(Spanish lavender) Unique for its long bracts which crown the top of the deep purple inflorescence. Light aroma is highlighted by a camphor - rosemary undertones. Rosemary like leaves are used for essential oil production. Can be used as other lavenders, for potpourri and in sachets. Although the French variety is not as hardy as other varieties, it has a lengthy blooming season which begins earlier than others. Like any other variety, French Lavender must be located in full sun and planted in well drained alkaline sandy soil, ideally in a raised bed or rock garden as it is prone to root rot if conditions are too wet. Perfect for borders, rock gardens and containers. Bloom time early as May with a second wave around June followed by a third in late summer or fall. Ht up to 2 feet.
