Seal Lavender
Lavandula x intermedia 'Seal'
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal/Aromatic/Industrial Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 5-9)
A favourite for lavender sachets, as the pleasant aroma lasts for about two years! Large bushy growth habit with dark purple-violet flowers that appear on long spikes. Named after its introduction at the English Seal Herb Farm in 1935 where it was once considered to be the best variety for commercial production, both for drying and for oil. Typically faster growing and produce longer stems and broader leaves than the augustifolia group. Like any other variety, Seal Lavender must be located in full sun and planted in well drained alkaline sandy soil, ideally in a raised bed or rock garden as it is prone to root rot if conditions are too wet. Perfect for borders, rock gardens and containers. After the second year of growth, begin pruning once or twice a year, cutting back a third of its foliage. This will help maintain its shape, leaf and flower production as well as prevent woodyness. Varieties in the intermedia group are typically the latest to bloom, occurring right after those in the augustifolia group have finished, beginning in July until late summer. Height 120cm.
