| White Leadwort |
| Plumbago zeylanica|
| Uses: Medicinal/Poisonous!
|| Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 9-11+) |
A powerful herb, in use for more than two millennia. Traditionally the root is used in India to treat rheumatism, indigestion, abdominal pain and piles. Research shows it is a potent antioxidant, protecting the liver, the nerves and the cardiovascular system. It has proven anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antifungal, and anticancer properties. Animal studies show it also significantly lowers blood cholesterol and triglycerides. But all this medicinal power comes with the risk of overdose causing respiratory failure and death, so leadwort should not be used without professional supervision. Evergreen shrub with clusters of white flowers appearing year round. It does well in containers if pruned regularly. Prefers full or partial sun.
