Myrrh
Commiphora myrrha
Uses: Aromatic
Myrrh is an oleo-resin from the bark of Commiphora trees, native to North Africa and the Middle East. It was one of the three gifts of the magi to the child Christ: “Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold, and of incense and of myrrh.” (Matt. 2:11). In antiquity myrrh resin far more valuable than gold. In Roman times it was burned at funerals and the dissolute emperor Nero burned a year´s supply of myrrh at the funeral of his wife Poppea, at a staggering expense. It is analgesic and anti-bacterial, making it a useful disinfectant and preservative. It is used in perfume, toothpaste and antiseptic salves. The scent of myrrh is comforting, easing grief and lifting the heart. It has demonstrated some anti-cancer properties in preliminary studies.
