Oats, of course, have been an important staple food for humans and their livestock for millenia. Less well known is that the straw of the oat plant is medicinal, with important antispasmodic, nervine, and stimulant properties. A tea made from the oat straw is used to ease chest problems. It is useful in the bath for a variety of complaints such as rheumatism, lumbago, gout, liver and kidney problems.
