Evergreen shrub native to wooded slopes in British Columbia and into the northwestern U.S. Contains berberine, the same active compound found in goldenseal. Roots are considered for ‘blood purifying’ and antibiotic and are recommended for constipation and rheumatism, as well as skin diseases such as acne, eczema, herpes and psoriasis.
