(African plum)
In traditional African medicine the powdered bark of this tree is used for bladder and urination problems. Studies have shown that pygeum bark taken orally as a tea reduces symptoms of enlargement of the prostate, including those associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is not clear how it does this, as prostate gland enlargement is not affected by pygeum. However, frequency of nighttime urination, hesitancy and pain -- symptoms of enlargement of the prostate -- are significantly reduced. Pygeum is one of the three most effective herbs for this condition that impairs the quality of life for many men over 50; the others are saw palmetto and stinging nettle.
