Sheep Sorrel
Rumex acetosella
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 4-8)
When to Sow: Spring/Late Summer/Early Fall Ease of Germination: Easy
One of the four ingredients of the EssiacĀ® anti-cancer remedy, developed by a Canadian nurse, Rene Caisse, in the 1920s, propelling its initial bout of popularity. Traditionally used to treat hemorrhaging, sore throats, fevers, diarrhea and as a diuretic. A nutritious, cool weather leafy green that can be eaten fresh, adding a sour and tangy lemon like flavour to salads. A good source of Vitamin C and Iron! Prefers full sun but will tolerate a little shade, which will keep it from bolting early in the season. Performs best in nutrient rich soil, producing an abundance of leafy growth. Can be directly sown 2-3 weeks before that last spring frost date. Also makes an excellent container herb!
