Silver Speedwell
Veronica incana
Uses: Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 3-9)
When to Sow: Spring/Late Summer/Early Fall Ease of Germination: Easy
A truly eye-catching plant, one of the few types of speedwell grown for its leaves as well as its flowers. Silver speedwell has silver white foliage and bears deep blue flowers on dramatic, stiffly upright spikes. It is drought tolerant and prefers a well-drained situation, making it a good choice for xeriscaping or rock gardens, as it cannot tolerate cold, wet soil. The blue flowers are attractive to certain species of butterfly, and once it begins blooming in the summer deadheading will extend the flowering throughout the season. Folk medicine tradition indicates it has astringent properties. An elegant addition to silver gardens.
