Anthrospira platensis

A type of blue-green algae, spirulina is protein-rich nutritional supplement with a history of human consumption going back centuries in Africa and Latin America. Consumed in cake form or crumbled and added to cooked dishes, spirulina is traditional food used for both humans and animals. Health Canada has rated spirulina the only blue green algae safe for human consumption. Recent research has uncovered neuro-protective capacities, particularly in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and dementia. It has also been used to increase endurance, as an immune system booster, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Dark green powder is astonishingly pungent on its own, but quite palatable when added to fruit juices, smoothies and shakes. Contains phenylanine.
