When to Sow: Spring/Late Summer/Early Fall Ease of Germination: Easy
Grows and spreads rapidly through underground rhizomes and prolific seed production in moist, rich soil. Produces fragrant fern like foliage and pretty yellow button flowers. Was grown as a necessity in colonial gardens in the 1600s. Used historically by the Native Americans as a remedy for infection, digestive concerns, parasites as well as an abortifacient. Interestingly enough, oils have been found to be acaricidal, killing ticks and mites as well as repelling a number of other insects including ants, cockroaches and agricultural pests. Oils have been studied for their antioxidant, immunomodulating, antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties. Used as a source for yellow and green fabric dyes. Rarely used by herbalists today due to the toxicity of the chemical component, thujone present. Height 3 feet.
