French Tarragon
Artemisia dracunculus sativa
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 4-7)
The true variety used in French cooking. Dark green, shiny leaves possess a distinctive sweet mint anise flavour with hints of eucalyptus and pepper, that makes it a delicious addition to sauces, meat, fish and vegetable dishes. Tender leaves can be thrown in a salad or used in summer cocktails! Best used fresh, as dried herb has a diminished flavour. Not only a prized culinary herb, but also makes a wonderful aromatic garden plant. Although these plants can survive long periods without water, they will not produce new foliage under these conditions and should be watered every 2-3 days. Ensure optimal flavour by giving plants enough root space as well as well drained alkaline soil. Thrives in full sun. Height up to 90cm/36 inches.
