When to Sow: Spring Ease of Germination: Easy
A tall thorny medicinal herb with a high reputation when it comes to protecting and supporting the liver. The combination of biologically active flavones and flavonolignans collectively known as silimarin extracted from its seeds, have the ability to repair and restore the function of liver cells subjected to disease such as viral hepatitis and exposure to toxins. In fact, the Food & Drug Administration in Germany has proposed this medicinal plant to treat digestive disorders, intoxication and alcoholic liver as well as a complement drug to treat enlarged liver. This is mainly due to its high antioxidant activity and membrane stabilization through glutathione production. As its name suggests, it is also effective in improving milk secretion to lactating mothers. Will grow almost anywhere and therefore, spread must be controlled.
