White Willow
Salix alba
Uses:
Medicinal
The bark of the beautiful, mystical willow tree was one of the first sources of salicin, a precursor to a compound used in aspirin, first extracted in 1882! For this reason, it is no surprise that it possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties, also used as an active ingredient in several topical creams and cleansers to soothe acne. Because of its analgesic properties, it has been used to treat rheumatism and gout. Astringency makes it a good remedy for diarrhea and topical wounds. Species in this genus were once used by Native Americans to treat lumbago, headaches, fevers and other illnesses. Fibres were used to weave baskets, make nets and use as rope. Typically administered as a tincture, tea or capsule.
