Sweet Woodruff
Galium odoratum
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 5-9)
Popular choice for shade gardens, as sweet woodruff thrives in deciduous forests. It spreads fast, which makes it a great groundcover! Plant produces an attractive bed of deep green foilage with soft vanilla scented leaves and delicate white flowers. The plant contains a high amount of coumarin compounds, which give it the aroma of freshly mowed grass. Luckily, although we love the scent of coumarins, mosquitoes and moths dont! Can be planted as an insect repellent. Dried leaves have potential to substitute mothballs as well as potpourri. It is very well known as a flavouring in Europe. Medicinally, it is a powerful antioxidant and its wound healing ability has also been demonstrated in a study by Kahkeshani et al (2013). Its tannin constituents make it ideal to use as a poultice on skin abrasions. Leaves can be brewed for a calming tea. Helpful for migraine, nervous conditions and stomach pain. Needs a shady spot with lots of room to grow. Ht 4-8 inches.
