This special carosello, or vegetable melon, from Polignano is one of the delightful melons grown in southern Italy for salad use. The immature fruits are slightly velvety. Used like cucumbers in salads, they add a unique "perfumed" taste that is more flavourful than a regular cucumber. Carosello melons are a traditional crop of southern Italy and are virtually unknown everywhere else.
