I have a male cat (2 years old) and he gets urinary infections. Can you please advise if there’s anything natural I can give him?
By and large and in my experience, once cats are on a good, homemade diet they seldom are affected by urinary tract infections (cystitis) or stones/gravel. Please see the work of Richard Pitcairn, "Natural Health for Dogs and Cats", "The Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat" by Juliette de Bairacli Levy and "The Barf Diet" by Ian Billinghurst for ideas, information and recipes. In addition, you may want to look at employing a mixture of herbs in glycerite form such as Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea), Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis), Couchgrass (Agropyron repens) and Oregon Grape (Berberis aquifolium) in equal parts. These herbs have the ability to combat infection, support the immune system and most importantly, reduce irritation in the urinary tract, thus allowing the tissue to heal. However, these herbs are only a temporary measure. In the longterm a homemade food as mentioned above will help balance your cat’s pH balance and strengthen his immune system; both needed in order to avoid future episodes of cystitis.
