I have a 10 year old female dog, who is constantly scooting her butt. She also has 2 fatty tumors, non cancerous. Please advise me on what you would recommend for these problems.
There are at least a couple of reasons your dog may be scooting: one is that her anal glands are impacted and two is that she may have worms. In the first instance, you may notice that there is some inflammation or swelling on either side of your dog’s anus. These glands secrete a fluid that is thought to be involved in territorial marking and are typically cleaned through the process of defecation. However, if a dog is obese or lacks muscle tone for some reason, these glands can become infected and abscessed. If this is the case, it might be wise to take your dog to the veterinarian to have these glands expressed and checked for signs of infection. In the second scenario, it would be important to take a fecal sample to your vet to see if any worms or other parasites are present. Preventative care for both anal gland impaction and worms would include the use of a good, homemade diet.
