Growing Commercial Dandelion in Northern British Columbia

Ron Nielsen here in Rolla, B.C., just north of Dawson Creek. Can you suggest any online resources on the cultivation and marketing of dandelions in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan?

You live VERY far north, even as the crow would fly. When I was a boy, my Dad and I would head up toward that region to hunt moose. As I remember, it was also a very long drive from Washington State. It is beautiful country, and dandelion should grow rather well on your dairy farms.

Not much has been written on dandelion as a cash crop, as it is just now becoming "in demand" as a potential coffee substitute. Is your ground rocky or wet? It has been more than 50 years since I visited Dawson Creek. I have personally grown Dandelion in over 12 different locations over the last 20 years, and have even prepared a technical crop report for Richters Herb Farming Series: www.herbfarminfo.com

If you would like more specific detail on cultivation and harvest techniques for your region, I am available as an outside consultant via telephone. Set up a time to call via e-mail, and then we can discuss your habitat, potential problems, and situation. At some point, Conrad might add this crop to his Herb Farming Series. With coffee being sold at every corner of most small towns, this could become an important cash crop.
